<dc:description>The principal holdings of the UFMG Microorganism and Cell Collection consist of yeasts (approximately 50,000 isolates) and filamentous fungi (approximately 20,000 isolates), all deposited and authenticated through sequencing of rRNA gene regions and, in specific cases, additional genes (RNA polymerase, elongation factor 1-alpha, and mitochondrial DNA). These microorganisms were isolated from Brazilian ecosystems including the Atlantic Forest, Amazon Rainforest, Cerrado, Rupestrian Fields, Caatinga, and Restingas. A substantial portion of the collection was obtained from samples collected in Antarctica, representing the largest Brazilian collection of fungi from that continent and one of the most significant worldwide. With regard to yeasts, this is the largest Brazilian collection and one of the largest in the world. The yeast holdings include around 50,000 isolates and an estimated 200 new species yet to be described by science. As a collection of yeasts obtained from Brazilian tropical ecosystems, it is unique at the international level. Research conducted using the Collection has already led to the description of more than 100 new yeast species, including species of biotechnological relevance such as Spathaspora arborariae, Spathaspora boniae, Starmerella riodocencis, Kluyveromyces starmeri, Phaffia brasiliana, and Cyberlindnera xylosilytica, among others. In addition to the portion of the holdings dedicated to preserving microbial biodiversity from Brazilian ecosystems, the Collection also includes microorganisms isolated in Patagonia, the Atacama Desert, the Galápagos Islands, and Colombian high-altitude forests, making it a representative repository of several South American ecosystems. Concerning yeast species, the Collection includes approximately 300 type strains, representing more than 10% of the known species (approximately 2,500). The Collection is unique in Brazil in having curators who are trained taxonomists.</dc:description>
