<dc:description>The mammal collection at the Universidade Federal da Paraíba was created in 1979 under the direction of Professor Juan Alfredo Ximenez. This collection is considered one of the most important in Brazil due to its taxonomic representation. The main collection consists of 12,600 recorded mammal specimens. In addition to these specimens, the collection contains approximately 12,000 tissue samples for DNA extraction, a collection of 3,000 metaphase chromosome slides for taxonomic identification and evolutionary studies, and a set of collection metadata in the form of field notebooks. The collection has seven type specimens, that is, specimens on which the description of a new species was based. It currently houses approximately 62% (151/243) of the genera and 32% (243/701) of the mammal species in Brazil. The collection contains witness material from almost all Brazilian states with the exception of Acre and Amapá. However, it predominantly contains specimens of mammal fauna from the northeast region (~85%), followed by the center-west (5.7%), southeast (5%), south (2.2%), and, lastly, north Brazil (1.5%). </dc:description>
