The UNESP - Microbial Resource Centre (UNESP - MRC) is based at the Institute of Biosciences of the São Paulo State University, Campus of Rio Claro. The UNESP - MRC`s collection comprises a total of 4,000 yeast and filamentous fungal strains originated from insects and oil-contaminated environments as well as 1,000 filamentous fungal strains derived from marine habitats (including the Antarctic and Brazilian coasts). In addition, the collection harbors 100 bacterial voucher species. The UNESP - MRC collection was organized through individual and collaborative research projects involving several researches affiliated to the university. The collection has been used for several purposes including, diversity and phylogenetic studies as well as for prospecting active compounds with biotechnological interest such as enzymes, antimicrobials, production of biofuels and bioremediation.
