<dc:description>The crustacean collection has over 3,000 lots with approximately 68,000 specimens, distributed in 50 families, 110 genera and 202 species. It currently has one holotype and eight paratypes.
The earliest records of the collection date from the 60`s, coming mainly from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. There is also material from other states, covering all regions of Brazil, as well as representatives from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay. Among the material in the collection, we emphasize those collected for environmental studies, mainly related to the construction of hydroelectric plants. The largest diversity of the collection is in Decapoda, with more recent increase in the Isopoda due to the inclusion of fish parasites from lake Guaíba/RS. Specimens are kept in 70% ethanol and organized in a special room in phylogenetic order to groups up to family and in alphabetical order, the lower taxons.</dc:description>
