The NUPEM Fish Collection (NPM) currently holds approximately 25,000 specimens in over 1,800 lots, representing about 450 fish species. A significant part of continental fish fauna from Norte Fluminense and deep-sea Campos Basin is represented in the collection. The NPM also includes specimens collected in other Brazilian regions as well as other countries in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania, acquired through exchanges with foreign institutions. The collection represents adequately the fish diversity from Norte Fluminense and the Campos Basin, regions heavily threatened by several environmental impacts. The NPM is recognized in the most recent compilation of ichthyological collections of the `American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists,` as well as `Catalog of Fishes`.
